How to think about vehicle safety ratings

Ratings help compare performance in defined tests—but no test programme represents every crash on every road.

Vehicle safety assessment programmes use defined test procedures and criteria to evaluate selected aspects of protection. Their results can help consumers compare vehicles, while also encouraging manufacturers to improve safety performance.

Read the programme, not only the stars

Before comparing two ratings, check which assessment programme issued them, the protocol year, the exact vehicle variant and the scope of the assessment. Different programmes can use different tests, occupant sizes, scoring rules and equipment requirements. A star rating from one programme should not automatically be treated as directly equivalent to a rating from another.

Where Bharat NCAP fits in

Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) is India's vehicle assessment programme. For current scope, eligibility, protocols and results, refer directly to official programme materials. Protocols can evolve; do not rely on a summary or social post when the exact current procedure matters.

Consumer tip: Use official ratings as one part of a broader decision. Also check standard safety equipment, seatbelt availability for all occupants, child-restraint compatibility, vehicle documentation and safe-driving practices.
